SC upholds stay on Mahbubul's removal from executive body

The Supreme Court yesterday upheld a High Court order that stayed the removal of Mahbubul Haque Chisty as chairman of the Farmers Bank's executive committee.

The apex court asked the HC bench led by Justice Md Ashfaqul Islam to dispose of the rule by February 15 to decide the legality of the expulsion.

The Appellate Division of the SC passed the order after hearing a petition filed by Bangladesh Bank, challenging the order.

There is no legal bar for Mahbubul to remain as chairman until the HC disposes of the rule, Farmers Bank's lawyer AKM Rashedul Huq told The Daily Star.

He said BB on May 17 last year removed Mahbubul from the post on charge of irregularities in giving loans worth Tk 45 crore to six institutions.

Following a writ petition, the HC bench on May 27 stayed BB's order and issued a rule asking the government and BB to explain why BB's order should not be declared illegal.
