A Joypurhat court yesterday sentenced four people to death for killing a Swechchhasebak League leader in Sadar upazila in 2005.

The death penalty awardees are Taslim Uddin Tiplu and Farhad Hossain, sons of Mozib Uddin of Tegharbisha village, Haidar Ali, son of Alauddin of Joypuhat Sadar upazila, and Shafin, son of Nazrul Islam of Dewanpara in Joypuhat municipality area. Farhad and Shafin are still at large.

Mizanur Rahman, Additional District and Sessions Judge delivered the verdict at a crowded court room.

According to the prosecution, Sirajul Islam, vice-president of Joypurhat district unit of Swechchhasebak League, was stabbed to death by a gang in front of his shop at Teghrabisha village on November 30, 2005.

Mujibar Rahman, father of the slain leader, filed a murder case with Joypurhat Sadar Police Station the following day, accusing 13 people.

After investigation, police submitted a charge sheet to the court against all the 13 accused. Five of them, Jahangir Hossain Babu, Md Arman Hossain, Rezaul Karim, Jahrul Islam and Shahinur Islam were acquitted of the murder charge as the prosecution failed to prove their involvement in the killing.

Four other charge-sheeted accused were killed in 'gunfights' with law enforcers at different times between 2007 and 2008, said Public Prosecutor Nripendranath Mondol.
