Lightning kills 5 in Mymensingh
Five people were killed and at least six others injured by lightning in different upazilas of Mymensingh yesterday.
In Dhubaura, two schoolboys-- Mosharraf Hossain, 14, a Class VII student of Bhedikura High School, and Delwar Hossain, 12, a Class V student of Gujirkandi Govt Primary School, were struck by thunderbolts at their respective houses around 9:00am and died instantly.
Delwar's younger sister Rahima Khatun, 9, cousin Mosharraf Hossain, 32, and Harun-Or-Rashid, 45, of Panchanandapur village also sustained injuries during the incident.
In Haluaghat, two farmers were killed and three others injured by lightning in two villages of the district.
The deceased, Jamshed Ali, 50, of Baniakanda village, and Rubel Karim, 32, of Puruapara village, died on the spot while they were working on their paddy fields in the morning.
Injured Aymona Khatun, 45, Noor Jahan Begum, 30, and Aysin Akhtar, 11, were admitted to a local hospital, said Jakiur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Haluaghat Police Station.
Kafil Uddin, 55, of Dhanerbhita village in Phulpur upazila was struck by lightning and died on the spot while he was returning home from a farmland yesterday.
Away in Jamalpur, a farmer was killed by lightning at Moddhya Kamalpur village in Bakshiganj upazila yesterday morning, reports our correspondent.
The deceased is Montu Mia, 56, of the village.
Mostafa Kamal, chairman of Kamalpur Union Parishad, said a thunderbolt hit Montu while he was cutting paddy at his farmland during heavy rain. He died on the spot.
