‘Game of Thrones: Aegon’s Conquest’ sets 2029 release date

The world of Westeros is heading to the big screen for the first time, with “Game of Thrones: Aegon’s Conquest” scheduled to arrive in cinemas in 2029.

Warner Bros has set the film’s theatrical release for June 6, 2029, with Owen Harris, known for his work on “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms”, attached to direct. Beau Willimon, the creator and showrunner of “House of Cards” and a writer on “Andor”, is penning the screenplay.

Plot details remain under wraps, although the film is expected to centre on Aegon I Targaryen, better known as Aegon the Conqueror. Set roughly 300 years before the events of the original “Game of Thrones”, the story will explore Aegon’s campaign to conquer and unite the Seven Kingdoms, establishing the Targaryen dynasty in Westeros. Aegon has yet to be portrayed in a live-action production, and no casting has been announced for the role.

The Targaryen dynasty has already been explored extensively through HBO’s “House of the Dragon” and “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms”. The former follows the family’s civil war generations after Aegon’s conquest, while the latter is set much closer to the events of the original series.

Harris is also an executive producer on “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms” and directed three episodes of the series. His other television credits include “Black Mirror”, “The Twilight Zone” and “Brave New World”. Willimon, meanwhile, served as showrunner of “House of Cards” and worked on “Andor”.

The original “Game of Thrones”, based on George RR Martin’s “A Song of Ice and Fire” novels, ran for eight seasons from 2011 to 2019. The franchise has since expanded through several prequel projects.

Before “Aegon’s Conquest” reaches cinemas, fans can look forward to the second season of “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms”, while “House of the Dragon” is set to conclude with its fourth season in 2028.
