Separated conjoined twins
The world prays for their wellbeing
Conjoined twins Trishna and Krishna survived a 32-hour surgery performed by Australian doctors at a Melbourne hospital on November 17. It is now a week since the surgery took place and the babies are shaping up well. We hope they will recover fully.
The happy separation is a big triumph of medical science and great news for the twins' poor parents, who had given up the hope of bringing the girls back to normal life and decided to put them in a Dhaka orphange. However, the lucky twins were spotted by Moira Kelly, an Australian woman working for children's welfare, and were taken to Melbourne two years ago.
That was just the first phase of what looked like a losing battle. It was the surgery that gave them a new lease of life, ending their precarious existence as conjoined babies. Now they are two separate physical entities, thanks to the doctors and advancement of medical science. It is something that will make people happy all over the world.
Moira Kelly has certainly set an example and shown how the groundswell of compassion for fellow beings inspired her to undertake such a huge task. We are enlivened and invigorated by Kelly's great gesture. We are also indebted to her as a nation for taking care of two hapless babies.
The success is truly great, given the poor survival rate of such conjoined babies who have their heads joined to each other. We can recall the Iranian girls who died after a similar operation a few years ago. So, the Australian doctors deserve a special round of plaudits for having performed the surgery with such meticulous precision. Medical science can duly boast of having made a breakthrough, one that will end the wretchedness of many such lives.
It gives us immense pleasure to learn that the two babies will now be able to see each othera privilege that almost all of us are fortunately endowed with. We hope they will see many more things beyond that and grow up as healthy citizens. They have won the first battle of their life and will surely overcome all odds in future too.
Moira Kelly has shown us the way a wee bit of compassion can change lives of people so dramatically. Out hats off to the great lady and her organisation!
