Car runs over man sitting on footpath in Baridhara

A construction worker resting on a footpath in Baridhara was run over by a private car yesterday, killing him on the spot, said police. The incident took place around 5:30pm in the Baridhara Diplomatic Zone. Police identified the victim as Mehedi Hasan Mir, 24, from Nilphamari.

According to Prothom Alo, the video of the incident, circulated on social media, shows a black car going onto the footpath and running over Mehedi, who was resting there. People nearby then rushed to the scene and pulled Mehedi’s body from underneath the car.

Ismail Hossain, inspector of Gulshan Police Station, said locals detained a 16-year-old boy who was in the car and handed him over to the police. The car was also seized.

Ismail told The Prothom Alo that the car belongs to the teen’s father. He said someone else was driving the car. Police are trying to arrest him, he said.
