Garment workers block Ctg road over ownership change reports
Workers of a garment factory blocked a road in Chattogram's Aturar Depot area since this morning over reports that the factory's ownership might change.
The blockade by workers of Ettade Jeans Ltd began around 11:30am, disrupting traffic on the Oxygen–Muradpur road and causing severe congestion, said Mahmuda Begum, superintendent of Chattogram Industrial Police.
As of 3:30pm, the workers were still occupying the road.
Mahmuda said the workers took to the streets after hearing reports of a possible change in ownership, although their specific demands could not immediately be confirmed.
“There are no outstanding salary payments at the factory, and workers have been paid through July,” she told The Daily Star.
She said the factory owner went to the spot and assured the workers that there would be no change in ownership for the time being. However, the workers continued the blockade.
“Their exact objective is not clear yet,” she added.
Members of the Industrial Police and local police were at the scene, trying to persuade the workers to clear the road, Mahmuda said.
