Fire Scare

At least one person was killed, forty people were injured, and a huge quantity of property was gutted in separate fire incidents in Dhaka city and Gazipur during the Eid holidays. Fire that broke out at Section-10 in Mirpur on Monday proved to be devastating. Originating from a cow-shed at around 6 p.m. on Monday it soon engulfed the adjacent godowns. It took at least four hours for the fire fighters to bring the fire under control although they had reached the spot soon after the fire broke out, This only goes to highlight the equipment drawbacks. Now, if experience is any guide to understanding the phenomenon, some localities in this densely populated capital city have been more vulnerable to fire eruptions than others. Still, contrary to common expectation, the denizens of such neighbourhoods have not shown any sign to be aware of the dangers that fires cause to their lives. Even in residential houses, this lack of fire sense is widely prevalent. Since these sorts of calamities are avoidable, people must be wakeful to the fire-related misfortunes. At the same time the government shoulders the responsibility for better equipping the fire-fighting units to cope with the situation.
