Nip in the Air
WINTER has arrived, which, for the many who live in slums and under the open sky, spells hardship. With the temperature going below 10 degrees Celsius over the past few days our northern region became almost paralysed. Owing to the biting cold two persons reportedly died. What is worse is that weather reports predicted four cold waves, two in this month and two more in the rest of the winter season. The 'jet wind' is also yet to come. These could lead to more deaths resulting from cold, just like in some previous winters.
Lives will have to be saved at any cost. Two deaths should be enough to open the eyes of the authorities to the risk of destitutes living out in the cold. There is no time for a longer term plan of action. Immediate measures are required to protect the vulnerable groups.
At this time, most schools are closed for winter and Eid. Shelter homes should be set up at such places. The government, NGOs and private organisations can do a lot to mitigate winter sufferings of the homeless by providing them with clothes, blankets. and some roof to live under. Action should be taken at the community or ward level to reach the maximum number of vulnerable people. We urge the authorities concerned to take the precautionary measures in good time for the rest of the winter.
