Govt has failed to curb extortion, violence: Charmonai Pir

Islami Andolan Bangladesh (IAB) Ameer Mufti Syed Muhammad Rezaul Karim, popularly known as Charmonai Pir, today said the government has failed to curb extortion, violence, corruption, looting, enforced disappearances and killings.

While addressing a ward representatives’ conference of the party’s Dhaka north and south city units at the Institute of Diploma Engineers auditorium in Kakrail, he said successive governments had failed to bring the desired changes and had forgotten their election pledges after coming to power.

“If the country continues to be run under the existing system, we may celebrate the diamond jubilee or centenary of independence, but the fate of the people will not change,” he said.

He also said IAB had never compromised on its principles and would not do so in the future, expressing hope that people would support a change in the country’s political system through the party.

Speaking at the conference, IAB Secretary General Maulana Gazi Ataur Rahman said they had expected the politics of extortion and deception to end after August 5, 2024, but that had not happened.

He accused the BNP government of delaying implementation of the July Charter and warned that continued delay could lead to a mass uprising.

Gazi Ataur said IAB had no hidden agenda and openly sought to implement Islamic Shariah in Bangladesh.

Sheikh Fazlul Karim Maruf, president of the party’s Dhaka south unit, urged party leaders and activists to build public support for Shariah, while Dhaka north unit President Atiqul Rahman Mujahid said the party would turn Dhaka into a smart city if elected.
