Price for a Lehenga?
Every year we come by some fascinating news and photographs during the Eid shopping period. This year a lehenga 'is up for grabs, at a staggering Taka 1.25 lakh,' so reads the caption of a photograph published on the frontpage of this newspaper Saturday.
The lady modelling this three-piece Rajasthan dress seems to be fascinated by the design and ornamentation of the dress which have become very popular with a fashionable section of our elite. The actual colour and craftsmanship cannot be appreciated from the black and white photograph nor can the quality of material, design and texture of the textile be vouched for. Nonetheless, the price tag is exceptionally high for anyone's comfort even though some connoisseurs might fall head over heels over it and take it home - may be at a bargain. The ghagra, blouse and dupatta make up this traditional dress of the desert-dwelling women of Rajasthan in India. From time immemorial women have adorned themselves in highly imaginative fashions from an inner sense of beauty as well as to make them look adorable. However, for quite some time now we have been watching a splurge during Eid-ul-Fitr. However, the costly lehenga must have been fixed bearing in mind the imagination of many who would love to possess such a pretty dress at all costs. Surely it will be bought by some rich customer and be flaunted on the festive day of Eid.
The wearer will best know how to match herself up with the beauty of her new acquisition and together they might be a mobile treasury for the would-be 'robbers.' Maybe she will require personal security, at least for the dress. We hope, with the guards around her, the wearer will be safe and sound and there will be no complaints of 'mugging' from the owner of the costly apparel.
