Joty set to leave T20I captaincy after Asian Games

Bangladesh women’s national team skipper Nigar Sultana Joty has informed the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) that she will step down as T20I captain following the Asian Games, BCB sources confirmed.

“She has informed us that she will not be staying on as T20I captain after the Asian Games but she will continue captaincy in the 50-over format,” BCB women’s wing chairman Rafiqul Babu told The Daily Star.

Joty was handed the ODI captaincy in 2021 before taking over as T20I captain in 2022.

BCB sources said certain media reports may have contributed to her decision.

The Tigresses are currently in Japan preparing for the Asian Games, with their first game scheduled for September 17.

Bangladesh won the T20 World Cup qualifiers as unbeaten champions under Joty’s captaincy, but a home loss to Sri Lanka, poor results in the recent tri-nation series involving the Netherlands and Scotland, and two wins in five matches at the T20 World Cup, followed by a disappointing Asia Cup run, saw her captaincy come under scrutiny.

The BCB were informed of Joty’s decision via email, sources said.
