Perimenopause: the life stage nobody talks about

For many women, the years before menopause arrive quietly, bringing changes that are often confusing, frustrat-ing and easy to dismiss. Yet this stage, known as perimenopause, can begin in the 40s or even earlier, lasting sev-eral years before periods stop completely.

During this time, the body’s changing hormone levels may cause irregular periods, hot flushes, night sweats, poor sleep, mood swings, forgetfulness and unexpected weight gain. Some women also notice lower energy, head-aches or a drop in confidence. Because these changes develop gradually, many mistake them for stress, ageing or simply having a busy life.

Despite affecting millions of women worldwide, perimenopause remains a topic rarely discussed at home, at work or even in healthcare settings. The silence often leaves women feeling isolated, wondering whether what they are experiencing is normal.

Experts say awareness is the first step towards better wellbeing. Eating a balanced diet, staying physically active, getting enough sleep and managing stress can ease many symptoms.

Many women hesitate to speak about their experiences because they fear being judged or dismissed. Friends, family members and employers may not recognise that these changes can affect daily life, relationships and work performance. Creating supportive workplaces, encouraging open conversations and providing reliable information can make this transition far less overwhelming.

Perimenopause is not an illness, but a natural stage of life. Open conversations, greater understanding and timely support can help women navigate this transition with confidence instead of confusion, reminding them that they do not have to face it alone.
