Switzerland is emerging as one of Europe’s leading hubs for AI. The country combines internationally recognised universities, cutting-edge research infrastructure and a strong innovation ecosystem. AI has become a strategic priority across research, business and international cooperation. This ecosystem is built on close collaboration between academia, startups, industry and public institutions. In 2023, ETH Zurich and EPFL launched the Swiss AI Initiative to unite researchers, startups, and industry. This collaboration aims to develop large-scale AI models and strengthen Switzerland’s long-term research capacity.

ALPS, one of world’s most advanced supercomputers

Switzerland’s AI ecosystem is anchored by the ALPS supercomputer, operated by Swiss National Supercomputing Centre (CSCS), which runs scientific simulations and trains AI models, including Apertus, the country’s first open, multilingual language model.

Additionally, the Swiss-backed International Computation and AI Network (ICAIN) connects CSCS, ETH Zurich, EPFL, and international partners to provide a collaborative, public-good platform. ICAIN lowers barriers for governments and researchers, enabling them to build and operate sovereign, transparent, and interoperable AI systems.

How Switzerland turns AI research into startups

Switzerland effectively transforms scientific research into real-world applications, with AI representing a leading sector for spin-offs from ETH Zurich. Driven by close links between academic talent, entrepreneurship, and investment, Switzerland has ranked first in the Global Innovation Index for over a decade.

Geneva and the future of global AI governance

Geneva serves as a global center for digital and AI governance. It hosts standard-setting bodies like the ITU (International Telecommunication Union) and ISO (International Organization for Standardization), which define standards in telecommunications, cybersecurity, and data governance. Additionally, the Geneva Internet Platform facilitates international dialogue on digital policy.

A global AI summit in Geneva in 2027

During the February 2026 AI Impact Summit in New Delhi, Swiss President Guy Parmelin announced that Geneva will host the next AI Summit on June 21–22, 2027. This event will gather governments, researchers, technology companies, and international organizations to discuss the future of AI and global digital cooperation.
