Lara scales a new height
Our felicitations to him
Brian Lara, the West Indian batsman, with a spring to his feet, has become the highest Test run scorer in world cricket. He has bettered Australian batsman Allan Border's record while playing on the very soil of Australia where Allan had made his feat. And, Lara has achieved the target in 121 Test matches as against 156 by Allan Border. Incidentally, Lara also holds the record of scoring 400 hundred runs in a Test match playing against England, a formidable team. Thus he has cliched both records from top order teams -- Australia and England attesting to his cricketing brilliance. Lara's achievements, most significantly, came at a time when the once dominating West Indies were on the downward swing in world cricket. He has shown that it is possible to achieve individual excellence even when the going is bad for your team given the commitment and faith in oneself, a lesson our cricketers could do well to remember.
He has also shown us that the game of cricket at international levels is also a game of minds and nerves. Lara's achievement has not only brought fame and recognition for himself but also a much-coveted recognition for his country.
Striving cricketers of a typical third world country like Bangladesh beset with innumerable socio-economic problems could, just like Lara, not only bring laurels to individual performances but also honor and recognition for the entire nation.
We congratulate Brian Lara on his extraordinary feat and wish the people of West Indies God Speed.
