Barishal University punishes 48 students over ragging incidents

In a first, Barishal University has taken disciplinary action against 48 students from four departments over separate ragging incidents, imposing suspensions and fines based on the severity of the offences.

The sanctions, the first of their kind at the university for ragging-related offences, were communicated through separate letters signed by acting registrar Dr Abdul Alim Bashir on Tuesday.

According to decisions of the university's disciplinary board, five students from the law department were punished over a ragging incident on July 15, 19 students from the marketing department over an incident on August 19, 14 students from the computer science and engineering department over an incident on August 9, and 10 students from the political science department over an incident on July 22.

University Proctor Md Mehedi Hasan Sohag said a total of 48 students had been brought under disciplinary action.

“Five investigation committees from five departments submitted recommendations. Four departments recommended punishment for 48 students. Another department did not mention the names of the accused students, so it has been asked to submit a fresh investigation report mentioning their names,” he told The Daily Star.

The punishments fall into three categories: one-year suspension or a fine of Tk 20,000; six-month suspension or a fine of Tk 15,000; and six-month suspension or a fine of Tk 10,000.
