Don’t call me Shibir anymore: Rucsu GS Ammar after losing ‘Sathi’ membership

Rajshahi University Central Students’ Union (Rucsu) General Secretary Salahuddin Ammar has lost his "Sathi" membership of Islami Chhatra Shibir over allegations of moral misconduct and violation of organisational discipline.

“The matter dates back to 2025. He [Salahuddin Ammar] was expelled from the organisation over allegations of irregularities,” he said.

Mehedi also said Ammar’s "Sathi" membership was first suspended on February 2, 2025, and he was given an opportunity to defend himself. As he failed to do so, he was expelled from the organisation in September that year, he said.

According to the party, "Sathi" is a stage in becoming a full member of Islami Chhatra Shibir. After completing this stage, a person can become a member and hold a position in the organisation.

Although Ammar’s "Sathi" membership was cancelled on July 31 this year in a letter signed by Rajshahi University unit Shibir President Mujahid Faisal, the decision only came to light recently.

According to the letter, Ammar’s "Sathi" membership was initially suspended at the RU unit Shibir’s monthly secretariat meeting in February 2025 over allegations of ethical misconduct, negligence in performing basic religious obligations, inappropriate association with women, illegal financial transactions and misappropriation of assets, and involvement in activities contrary to the organisation’s aims and objectives.

The letter said Ammar failed to provide a satisfactory explanation in response to the allegations. Subsequently, the monthly secretariat meeting in September 2025 decided to cancel his "Sathi" membership.

It also said the organisation believed Ammar’s activities, including his alleged involvement in criminal offences in some cases, were creating instability on campus.

Shibir leaders and activists were instructed not to make any positive or negative comments or reactions about his online or offline activities, according to the letter. Only elected Rucsu office-bearers were allowed to maintain official communication with him, the letter added.

Ammar was elected Rucsu GS in the 2025 election from the “Adhipotto-Birodhi Oikya” panel. The panel was widely described at the time as a “dummy panel” of Shibir.

When contacted on Wednesday night, Salahuddin Ammar said in a WhatsApp message that he was attending a Rucsu session but did not comment about the allegations.

He later denied the allegations in a Facebook post.

“I have been accused of having inappropriate relationships with women, extortion and selling posts in exchange for money. I want to make it clear that I have no involvement in any of these allegations. If someone makes an allegation, there should also be evidence to support it. More importantly, how can I be expected to prove that I did not do something?” he said.

“I urge those who have made these allegations to make their evidence public. I am ready to clarify the matter through my statements and record of work,” he added.

Ammar also said, “I hope that from today onwards, no one will insult me by calling me a Shibir.”
