JCD forms probe body over attack on journalists, students at RU
Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) has formed a two-member committee to probe allegations of an attack at Rajshahi University that left at least 10 people, including students and journalists, injured on Sunday night.
The committee, headed by JCD central vice-presidents ABM Ijazul Kabir Ruel and Manjurul Alam Riad, has been asked to investigate the incident and submit a written report to the organisation's central committee within 24 hours, according to a press release issued on Sunday night.
JCD President Rakibul Islam Rakib and General Secretary Nasir Uddin Nasir issued the directive, the statement said.
Earlier in the evening, witnesses alleged that a group of Rajshahi University JCD leaders and activists attacked journalists and students in front of Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Hall around 8:30pm.
According to witnesses, several members of the group were carrying machetes, hockey sticks, pipes, and baseball bats.
Among those injured were The Daily Star's RU correspondent and Rajshahi University Reporters Unity President Nur Ahsan Mridul, Zahidul Islam of Agamir Shomoy, Arifuzzaman Korban of bdnews24.com, and Mainul Islam Raju of Samakal.
Witnesses identified several RU JCD leaders of being involved in the attack.
Meanwhile, National Citizen Party has condemned the alleged attack by JCD leaders and activists on journalists and students at the university, demanding the arrest and punishment of those responsible.
