12 cops injured in gunfight during Raozan raid

Twelve police personnel were injured during a gunfight with an armed extortion gang in Raozan upazila, Chattogram, on Wednesday night, leading to the arrest of a bullet-wounded suspect and the recovery of a cache of arms and ammunition.

Chattogram District Superintendent of Police (SP) Md Masud Alam disclosed details of the drive at a press conference at the police headquarters yesterday afternoon.

Police said the clash occurred around 10:30pm in the South Kadalpur Joynagar Barua Para area. Acting on a September 25 extortion complaint against a syndicate led by Md Jane Alam, alias Dacoit Alam, and Mohammad Aziz, alias Aziz Boss, a police team cordoned off Jane Alam’s residence. Sensing their presence, the criminals opened fire.

Law enforcers seized two local light guns (LGs), 119 rounds of Chinese rifle ammunition, six lead cartridges, four machetes, two tactical vests, and two ammunition pouches from the spot.

Police retaliated in self-defense, triggering a gunfight. While most suspects fled, 37-year-old Dildar Hossain was arrested with a bullet wound to his leg.

Ten to 12 police personnel sustained injuries during the incident and received primary medical treatment at local hospitals.  Law enforcers seized two local light guns (LGs), 119 rounds of Chinese rifle ammunition, six lead cartridges, four machetes, two tactical vests, and two ammunition pouches from the spot. Drive to arrest the absconding members is underway.
