Sending workers abroad in large numbers will bring little benefit to the country unless they are properly skilled, Expatriates’ Welfare and Overseas Employment Minister Ariful Haque Choudhury said yesterday.

“If we cannot send skilled workers, there will be no real benefit for the country simply by increasing the numbers and sending lakhs of workers abroad,” he said.

The minister was speaking while inaugurating a trolley service for migrant workers and visiting the expatriate welfare desk at Shah Amanat International Airport in Chattogram.

Ariful directed the airport authorities to set up an emergency medical centre for migrant workers, saying instructions had already been given to select a location for the facility.

At a press briefing later, the minister said around 4.34 lakh workers had gone abroad for employment over the past seven months despite the ongoing tensions in the Middle East.
