After earning accolades at international festivals, Akram Khan’s "Nakshikathar Jamin" was released in theaters across the country on December 27 last year. The film is now set to screen on OTT soon.

Director-turned-actor Saraf Ahmed Zibon, celebrated for his comedic performances, has added another accolade to his career. He won Best Supporting Actor (Male) in the Popular Category at the Blender’s Choice–The Daily Star OTT & Digital Content Awards 2024 for his role in Kajal Arefin Ome’s web-film “Osomoy’.

The launch event drew prominent figures from the country’s film and theatre community, including Shahiduzzaman Selim, president of the Directors Guild; Azad Abul Kalam, president of Actors’ Equity; directors Chayanika Chowdhury and Sakal Ahmed; and artistes Imtiaz Barshan and Prasun Azad. Their presence was hailed as an inspiration for emerging filmmakers committed to socially conscious storytelling.

I was pleasantly surprised to find very few tickets left for an afternoon show on a working day for an anime movie screening in Bangladesh. Outside the halls, a sizeable crowd waited, dressed up in haoris of their favourite characters. “Demon Slayer Infinity Castle” is here at Star Cineplex, and the hype is real. 

The film will be released in theatres on September 26, coinciding with the Durga festival.

Director Piplu R Khan’s pandemic-era drama “Jaya Aar Sharmin” will premiere on Chorki at 12:01 am on September 25. Starring Jaya Ahsan and Mohsina Akter, the film captures the quiet intensity of two women—an actress and her house help—confined within a single home during the Covid-19 lockdown. Their fragile bond grows in silence and eventually strains under the weight of isolation and shifting relationships.

She also mentioned that due to the sudden nature of the decision, her only sister-in-law was unable to attend the ceremony as she is currently abroad. She added, “However, in the future, we plan to organise a post-wedding reception with colleagues, relatives, and close friends. We hope for everyone’s prayers and good wishes for our new journey.”

Monihar Cinema Hall in Jashore – often described as the country’s largest single-screen theatre and once a destination for film lovers from Japan, Korea, Africa, Australia, Russia, and England – is preparing to shut its doors after 42 years. Plans are underway to demolish the historic venue to make way for an expanded market and a residential hotel, owner Ziaul Islam Mithu confirmed.
