SRB detains BNP ward leader over extortion allegations in Dhaka
A BNP leader was detained by the Special Response Battalion (SRB) today over allegations of extortion in Dhaka.
Mizanur Rahman Swapan, president of BNP’s ward 28 unit was handed over to Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station, said Ibn-e-Mizan, deputy commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s Tejgaon division.
“SRB detained him and later handed him over to the police station,” he told The Daily Star.
Police and SRB officials said Swapan had been accused of extortion in the Sher-e-Bangla Nagar and Mohammadpur areas.
“The process of taking legal action against him is underway,” Monirul Islam, officer-in-charge of Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station, told The Daily Star.
