Ed Sheeran’s Gillette Stadium concerts cancelled over severe weather

Ed Sheeran’s scheduled concerts at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts have been cancelled due to severe weather warnings linked to a nor’easter expected to hit the US East Coast.

The shows, originally set for yesterday and tonight, were called off after the tour’s promoter Messina Touring Group consulted with local officials.

“Due to the severe weather warnings in place in Boston and across New England throughout the weekend, we have made the difficult decision to cancel the Ed Sheeran concerts at Gillette Stadium,” the promoter said in a statement.

The statement added that the decision was made with the safety of fans, staff and everyone involved in the production as the priority.

The cancellation comes as Sheeran continues his Loop Tour without former opening act Macklemore, who was removed from the lineup following controversy over his comments supporting Palestine during two performances at New Jersey’s MetLife Stadium earlier this month.

Other opening acts, including Finneas O’Connell, Danish band Lukas Graham, Irish band Beoga and singer-songwriter Aaron Rowe, have also left the tour.

Gillette Stadium owner Robert Kraft had previously expressed objections to Macklemore’s remarks. Kraft said the venue had a commitment to providing an environment free from hate speech and that Macklemore’s participation would not be suitable for the September shows at the stadium.

Following discussions with venues, Messina Touring Group announced on September 14 that Macklemore would no longer appear on the remaining dates of Sheeran’s US tour.

The promoter said venues had informed them that concerts would not proceed with Macklemore included in the lineup, which could have affected the tour and hundreds of thousands of fans.

The cancellation of the Gillette Stadium shows is separate from the earlier lineup change and was announced due to weather concerns.
